A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Crash Into Me

young-doctor-s2e2-adam-godley-16x9-1Previously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Pelagaya’s death brought out the absolute worst in Dan, disgusting his elder self.

In 1935, the train stops and Jon informs his traveling companion that they’ve reached his stop. He apologises for all the crying, and tells the man he’s right about the opera: it’s garbage. But unfortunately BumBuddy’s totally dead, and Jon failed to notice. He’s a terrible doctor.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: The Monster Inside

young-doctor-s2ep3-hamm-radcliffe-16x9-1Previously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: The White Guard showed up, bringing along the lovely Natasha, whom Dan quickly falls for. Despite her noticeable lack of interest, he dumps Pel in the hopes of winning Natasha over.

On the train, Jon rustles through his buddy’s blankets while the man’s asleep, searching for the notebook. Why BumBuddy has the notebook again I have no idea. The guy wakes up and asks if Jon’s trying to feel him up. Jon denies it and says he had an idea for his opera—a new aria, he can sing it if BB likes! ‘I’d rather you touched my balls,’ the guy growls. That means ‘no,’ Jon.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Shoot Yourself in the Foot

young-doctor-s2e2-margaret-clunie-16x9-1Previously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Jon was released from the asylum/prison and tried to sell Dan on the idea of drug-free living, and Dan used up all the hospital’s morphine.

Jon’s new friend the bum in the boxcar, wakes him by throwing his notebook at his head and asking about the morphine addict. Jon starts to explain that said addict isn’t just a friend of his, and then he notices that BumBuddy is pantsless and there are now several pages missing from the notebook. Apparently BumBuddy ate some bad borscht. Lovely.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: I Forgive You

Doctors-Notebook-S02-ep1-16x9-1Previously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Dan, the Young Doctor, arrived in Muryevo, a desolate outpost sandwiched somewhere between Hopeless and Misery. It didn’t take long for him to start sleeping with the only available woman and shooting up morphine, while chattering with Jon, his older self. In the 1930s, Jon nearly ODs and is committed.

I have to be honest, I’m surprised this show turned into a series. I honestly thought those four episodes that went up last year were one-offs. I mean, it’s not like both Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm don’t have incredibly busy schedules. It’s nice they were able to make the time for another season of this, because I really loved the show, as gross as it could be at times. Guess they really loved it too.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Rock Bottom

daniel-radcliffe-jon-hamm-a-young-doctors-notebookPreviously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Jon’s heroin habit was discovered as Dan’s got started. Dan also managed to save a girl’s life by performing a tracheotomy under pretty awful circumstances.

Jon’s gone way around the bend and is now doing shot after shot of morphine while the police hammer on his door. He finishes off the third (!!) one just as they manage to get in and the policeman who’s been interviewing him assesses the situation and tells the others to fetch a doctor.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: This is Muryovo. This is Muryovo on Drugs.

daniel-radcliffe-jon-hamm-a-young-doctors-notebookPreviously on A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Jon got busted by the police for his morphine habit and Dan tried to find purpose at the hospital, to no avail.

1934. The policeman shuts off the recording equipment he’s been using and gives us a lesson in morphine withdrawal as he calmly loads up a needle. For those interested, morphine withdrawal includes nausea, uncontrollable bowel movements, and involuntary ejaculation. Marvelous, where do we all sign up? He places the filled needle on the notebook and shoves it in Jon’s direction. Jon ignores it and reaches for a box of cigarettes, only to find it empty.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Saving the World One Peasant At a Time

daniel-radcliffe-jon-hamm-a-young-doctors-notebookPreviously on A Young Doctor’s Noteboook: Daniel arrived at a very remote hospital to start the business of being a doctor, aided by Jon, his older self.

We begin in medias res in 1934. One of the soviet soldiers/policemen is quizzing Jon about some prescriptions he wrote. Jon claims not to remember them. Soldier has the notebook too, but Jon says it’s just nonsense written when he was a boy.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook: Birth

daniel-radcliffe-jon-hamm-a-young-doctors-notebookJon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe in a period comedy together? I’m there. I don’t even care if it sucks.

Moscow, 1934. Jon Hamm sits smoking contemplatively behind a desk, looking out the window, and the only clue we get that this isn’t just another episode of Mad Men is the fact that he’s wearing a bow tie. Don Draper would never wear a bow tie. The camera pulls back and we see that his office is being ransacked by some Soviet soldiers. Jon picks up a notebook at his elbow and starts thumbing through it while he VOs that happiness is like good health: you don’t notice it until it’s gone. I’m not sure I agree with that. I sure realize when I’m happy. He goes on to say that he was happy back in 1917, when he was a recent med school graduate being sent to some very remote outpost to run the local hospital.

The Woman in Black: Wuthering Hate

I was going to do a full recap of this, but to be honest, I didn’t want to have to watch it again, so this will be a review instead. Harry Potter is over, which means it’s time for the younger members of the cast to redefine themselves as something other than their Potter roles. For Daniel Radcliffe, that meant taking on a couple of … Continue reading The Woman in Black: Wuthering Hate

Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliffe is putting Harry Potter behind him and starring in The Woman in Black, scheduled to be released in February 2012. I don’t know what this movie’s about, but I do know this is one of the creepiest trailers I’ve seen in a long time. What is it about slightly off children’s toys that make one’s skin crawl? I’m not normally one for the … Continue reading Woman in Black
